US stock markets<\/strong> sent mixed<\/strong> signals<\/strong> since last week with the NASDAQ 100 moving higher<\/strong> whilst the S&P 500 remain relatively unchanged<\/strong> and the Dow Jones 30 moving lower<\/strong>, as market fears of the US defaulting<\/strong> on its debt have alleviated<\/strong>, following progress<\/strong> by US<\/strong> lawmakers<\/strong> to resolve<\/strong> the debt<\/strong> ceiling standoff<\/strong>. In this report we aim to present the recent fundamental and economic news releases that impacted the US stock markets, look ahead at the upcoming events that could affect their performance and conclude with a technical analysis.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

US debt ceiling talks appear to be moving forwards<\/strong><\/h2>\n\n\n\n

Last week, the NASDAQ 100 gained ground<\/strong>, whilst the Dow Jones 30 declined<\/strong> and the S&P 500 remained relatively unchanged<\/strong>, as the probability<\/strong> of a US default<\/strong> decreases<\/strong>. Following the mataas<\/strong>–level<\/strong> talks between US<\/strong> lawmakers, the risk of the US defaulting<\/strong> on its debt<\/strong> has eased<\/strong>, as post-meeting statements indicated<\/strong> progress<\/strong> and contained strong<\/strong> wording<\/strong>, that the US<\/strong> would not<\/strong> be allowed<\/strong> to default<\/strong> diffusing<\/strong> excess<\/strong> worries<\/strong> in equities<\/strong> markets<\/strong>. Aiding to the fall of Dow Jones 30 index yesterday, was Home Depot<\/strong> whose earnings<\/strong> releases<\/strong> caused waves<\/strong> in the markets<\/strong>, after posting its biggest<\/strong> revenue<\/strong> miss<\/strong> in more than two decades<\/strong>. The earnings result, dealt a 2% blow<\/strong> to its stock\u2019s price, as in the forward<\/strong> outlook<\/strong> the company<\/strong> expects sales<\/strong> to decline<\/strong> between<\/strong> roughly 2% and 5% for the entirety of 2023, painting a gloomy<\/strong> picture<\/strong> for the home improvement retail<\/strong> giant<\/strong> and the probability<\/strong> that the Fed<\/strong> is likely to continue hiking<\/strong> rates, traders fear<\/strong> that consumer<\/strong> staples<\/strong> companies may be amongst the first to feel the negative<\/strong> implications<\/strong> of tight<\/strong> economic<\/strong> conditions<\/strong> stemming from restrictive<\/strong> monetary<\/strong> policy<\/strong> practices. However, there is an outlier<\/strong> amongst the equities<\/strong> markets, being the NASDAQ 100<\/strong>, which is currently on four-week winning streak<\/strong> defying<\/strong> expectations<\/strong>. This could be attributed<\/strong> to the AI generated hype<\/strong> around companies, albeit of which some are just remotely<\/strong> connected<\/strong> to the development<\/strong> of Artificial Intelligence<\/strong>, hence propping<\/strong> up their stocks<\/strong> like helium balloons<\/strong> that are just waiting to pop<\/strong> once the reality<\/strong> sets in, in a 2000\u2019s dotcom-bubble<\/strong> fashion. In addition, since the majority<\/strong> of companies<\/strong> have already posted<\/strong> their earnings<\/strong> for Q1, it is likely that the US<\/strong> equities<\/strong> markets<\/strong> are primarily driven<\/strong> by external<\/strong> factors<\/strong> such as the FX market, where a strengthening<\/strong> dollar<\/strong> has taken the spotlight away, as the banking fears<\/strong> subside<\/strong> at progress<\/strong> is made on raising<\/strong> the debt<\/strong> ceiling<\/strong> in order to avoid<\/strong> a US default<\/strong>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

BAIDU leads the way forward for China\u2019s equities markets<\/strong><\/h2>\n\n\n\n

Baidu<\/strong>, the Chinese behemoth<\/strong> announced its quarterly<\/strong> earnings<\/strong> report on Tuesday, beating<\/strong> revenue<\/strong> at earnings<\/strong> estimates<\/strong>, as market attention<\/strong> turns back towards the Chinese<\/strong> economy<\/strong>\u2018s rebound<\/strong> following it\u2019s re-opening<\/strong> in November. The better<\/strong> than anticipated<\/strong> earnings<\/strong> report is indicative<\/strong> of a continued confidence<\/strong> by investors in the Chinese equities markets<\/strong> which is still stronger than its American counterparts<\/strong>, as the latest growth<\/strong> data<\/strong> indicated that the economy<\/strong> grew<\/strong> by 4.5% in the first quarter. In addition, the company<\/strong> stated<\/strong> that certain elements<\/strong> of its businesses<\/strong> are experiencing demand<\/strong> approximating<\/strong> pre-pandemic levels<\/strong>, potentially providing investors with a greater than expected optimistic<\/strong> outlook<\/strong>. Furthermore, Baidu<\/strong> has also capitalized<\/strong> on the recent AI frenzy<\/strong> that has taken the world by the reigns and has announced that it is currently waitingfor its ChatGPT alternative<\/strong> \u201cErnie Bot<\/strong>\u201d to receive regulatory<\/strong> approval<\/strong> from the responsible Chinese<\/strong> authorities<\/strong>. In the event that Baidu\u2019s \u201cErnie Bot\u201d<\/strong> gains approval by state<\/strong> regulators<\/strong>, it would allow the search engine goliath<\/strong> to tap into a booming<\/strong> tech<\/strong> industry<\/strong>, given that the recent tensions<\/strong> between China<\/strong> and the US<\/strong> would most likely make it more difficult<\/strong> for Foreign<\/strong> AI<\/strong> companies<\/strong> to enter<\/strong> the Chinese markets<\/strong>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Looking at #BIDU<\/strong> Daily chart we observe investors reacting favorably<\/strong> to the positive<\/strong> earnings report from the company<\/strong>, as the stock<\/strong> has in its sights the 136.25 (R1) resistance<\/strong> line and its guided to higher<\/strong> ground<\/strong> by the formation of an upwards<\/strong> trendline<\/strong> on the 12th<\/sup> of May. We hold a bullish<\/strong> outlook<\/strong> bias for Baidu as the stock continues to validate our upwards<\/strong> moving<\/strong> trendline<\/strong> and supporting our case is the RSI<\/strong> indicator below our daily chart, which broke<\/strong> above<\/strong> the reading<\/strong> of 50 and is now heading<\/strong> for the 70 figure<\/strong>. For our bullish<\/strong> outlook<\/strong> to continue, we would like to see a break<\/strong> above<\/strong> the 136.25 (R1) resistance<\/strong> line with the next potential target<\/strong> for the bulls being the 141.50 (R2) resistance<\/strong> barrier. For a bearish<\/strong> outlook<\/strong>, we would like to see a clear<\/strong> break<\/strong> below<\/strong> the 131.50 (S1) support<\/strong> level followed by the potential testing<\/strong> of support<\/strong> at the 125.90 (S2) level<\/strong>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
