{"id":14486,"date":"2020-03-17T15:55:00","date_gmt":"2021-06-22T10:04:29","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/ironfx-com-php8.wp-dev.int.theitops.net\/?post_type=forex-blog&#038;p=14486"},"modified":"2025-12-30T09:23:41","modified_gmt":"2025-12-30T07:23:41","slug":"gbp-continues-its-slide","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.ironfx-id.com\/th\/gbp-continues-its-slide\/","title":{"rendered":"GBP continues its slide"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>The\u00a0<b>pound continued its slide<\/b>\u00a0against the\u00a0<b>greenback<\/b>\u00a0and the\u00a0<b>common currency<\/b>\u00a0yesterday, albeit some signs of stabilization seem to emerge. It\u2019s indicative of the\u00a0<b>pound\u2019s weakness<\/b>, that cable\u00a0<b>continued to fall<\/b>\u00a0even though the Fed proceeded with another\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.ironfx.com\/en\/fed-proceeds-with-another-surprise-rate-cut\"><b>surprise rate cut on Sunday<\/b><\/a>.\u00a0<b>Uncertainty surrounding the pound<\/b>\u00a0may be increased as Johnson\u2019s government decided to follow a different path regarding the coronavirus outbreak. Specifically,\u00a0<b>Johnsons\u2019 government<\/b>\u00a0had announced that it would\u00a0<b>pursue a strategy<\/b>\u00a0of a\u00a0<b>\u201cherd immunity\u201d<\/b>\u00a0which means though, that even\u00a0<b>more people have to be infected<\/b>\u00a0in order for the strategy to work\u00a0<b>intensifying the health risks<\/b>\u00a0along with the\u00a0<b>economic risks for the UK<\/b>. Also, the uncertainty regarding the future relationship of the UK with the EU is still hanging over the UK economy intensifying uncertainty even further. Despite the market not pricing in another possible rate cut by the BoE, analysts tend to note that the bank may be forced to provide\u00a0<b>further monetary stimulus<\/b>. We could see the\u00a0<b>pound remaining under pressure<\/b>, yet traders could be turning their eyes towards the release of\u00a0<b>UK\u2019s employment data<\/b>\u00a0for January, today. Cable continued its journey south yesterday, clearly breaking the 1.2310 (R1) support line, now turned to resistance. We maintain the bearish outlook for the pair as long as it remains below the downward trendline incepted since the 11th of March. Please note that technically the pair seems to find considerable support at the 1.2200 (S1) support line hence the strength of the prementioned downward trendline could be put to the test. Should the bears maintain their control over the pair, we could see it breaking the 1.2200 (S1) support line and aim if not break the 1.2110 (S2) support level. Should the bulls take over, we could see cable breaking the downward trendline, the 1.2310 (R1) resistance line and aim for the 1.2400 (R2) resistance level.<\/p>\n<h3>Also, the CAD weakens on uncertainty<\/h3>\n<p>The\u00a0<b>CAD weakened<\/b>\u00a0against a number of its counterparts yesterday as the\u00a0<b>uncertainty continues to rise<\/b>\u00a0for the Looney. The persistently\u00a0<b>weak oil prices<\/b>\u00a0continue to\u00a0<b>darken Canada\u2019s economic outlook<\/b>, as the\u00a0<b>commodity<\/b>\u00a0is one of the\u00a0<b>main products of the country<\/b>. At the same time BoC\u2019s surprise rate cut of 50 basis points on Friday also\u00a0<b>weakened interest rate differentials<\/b>\u00a0surrounding the CAD, while the bank yesterday released\u00a0<b>additional measures<\/b>\u00a0to\u00a0<b>support key funding markets<\/b>. It should be noted, that\u00a0<b>Canada\u2019s main stock market<\/b>\u00a0index\u00a0<b>tumbled nearly 10%<\/b>\u00a0according to Reuters, due to the uncertainty. We maintain a bearish outlook for the Loonie as further pressure could be expected and uncertainty persists. USD\/CAD continued to rise yesterday breaking the 1.3970 (S1) resistance line, now turned to support. We maintain a bullish outlook for the pair as it maintains a course above the upward trendline incepted since the 9th of the month. Should the pair\u2019s long positions continue to be favored by the market, we could see it breaking the 1.4050 (R1) resistance line, aiming for higher grounds. Should the pair come under the selling interest of the market, we could see it breaking the 1.3970 (S1) line and aim for the 1.3865 (S2) support level.<\/p>\n<h3>Other economic highlights today and early tomorrow<\/h3>\n<p>Today during the European session, UK\u2019s employment data for January are to be released as are the ZEW indicators for March from Germany and New Zealand\u2019s milk auction figures. In the American session, we get the US retail sales growth rate for February, Canada\u2019s manufacturing sales growth rate for January and the US industrial production growth rate for February. Just before the Asian session starts, we get from the US the API weekly crude oil inventories figure, as well as New Zealand\u2019s current account balance for Q4. During the Asian session, we get Japan\u2019s trade data for February.
